Here we go again. Every now and then clones turn up of bands that, through a few lucky songs, have enjoyed very widespread success (calling it planetary would be too much)... so why not imitate their deeds?! This time we are talking about Bloody Mary, a band that makes us imagine anything but that they are original.
Look and sound are drawn from bands such as HIM (which they cite as an influence) and Deathstars, and their offering fits perfectly as an answer to all those fans who listen to Depeche Mode and heavy metal. The sound is very dark, in line with the musicians' predictable outward appearance; the vocal lines match perfectly the role the musicians have created for themselves. Even the moniker, Bloody Mary indeed, is not very surprising: a bland play on words between the famous cocktail and the English word "blood", which also gives its name to their website.
On a purely musical level, the album Anno Zero shows off a really good production, and the song structures are deliberately simple so as to feel familiar even to newcomers to this sound. If this is proof of compositional know-how and musical experience, a very attentive listener might nonetheless tire of it quickly; it is no coincidence that we wonder why we should sit here listening to a band like them rather than going straight to the originals.
There is no shortage of moments to satisfy fans of Rammstein (Concrete Jungle) and of HIM themselves (Frozen), almost omnipresent in Bloody Mary's sound, or even a vocal splash in Marilyn Manson style here and there. So for lovers of the genre this could be another band to add to their collection, but if you are not into this sound you can skip it and listen to something else.
